If You Want to be a Writer, Spend More Time Writing

Just start writing!

Just start writing!

About a month ago, I purchased two new books about how to be a writer.  They both include tips for becoming a freelance writer and how to make good money doing it.  They look like really interesting books, but I still haven’t read a single page from them!

Did I waste my money on these books?  I don’t think so.  I will get around to reading them eventually.  The important point is that, during the month those books have been sitting on my shelf unopened, I have written over 14,000 words of my new book, 10 blog posts, and 10 email newsletters.  (That does not include the 10,000+ words I have written for my regular 9 to 5 job.)  I’m pretty sure that this writing is more important than reading about writing.

I’ve heard it from multiple people: if you want to be a writer, you have to spend more time writing than thinking about writing.  Many people, myself included, dream about being a writer because it sounds like a fun career.  However, your writing is more important than:

  • thinking about writing
  • dreaming about writing
  • reading about writing
  • talking about writing

If you really want to be a writer, just start writing.
