November Results and December Plans

I can’t believe November is over!  Time flies when you’re having fun…and when you’re extremely busy!

Wrote my First Novel

During the month of November I participated in the National Novel Writing Month contest (NaNoWriMo for short).  It is a contest designed to motivate aspiring writers to write a full-length novel.  One must write 50,000 words in 30 days (within the month of November) to win the contest.  The prize for winning is self-confidence and a full-length first draft of your very own novel!

I won!

I won! Woo hoo!

I’m happy to say that I won NaNoWriMo!  I wrote roughly 2,000 words per day and ended up with 50,015 words.  I am very happy with my first draft; it turned out far better than I thought it would.  I’m going to spend a lot of time during the rest of my writing experiment editing, rewriting, and generally making the novel awesome enough to try for publication.  I’ll be posting excerpts of my novel, details about my progress, and writing tips along the way.

eHow Articles

Soon I'll be rolling in Benjamins...

One of my eHow articles was deleted by the eHow staff, leaving me with 24 articles.  Those 24 articles earned me a total of $5.13 for November.  I was hoping for a bit more.  I had 4 articles throughout September that earned me roughly $2.30.  Now I have six times the number of articles, but only earned twice as much money.  I think I really need to focus on popular topics, keywords, and search engine optimization (SEO) in future articles.

Despite smaller earnings than I was hoping for, I’m still pretty happy with the results.  I did absolutely nothing in November to improve my articles or drive traffic to them.  An extra $5.13 for doing nothing is still pretty sweet.  And if I put a little more effort into these articles, I think I can squeeze a few more dollars per month out of them.

December Plans

Vacation from work + Santa = Awesome

Vacation + Santa = Awesome

I’m not going to set lofty goals for December because I am planning on some needed rest and relaxation at the end of the month.  I’ll be traveling for the holidays and visiting with family and friends.

My plan is to put finishing touches on my eHow articles and try to send more traffic to them.  Finishing touches will include adding pictures, adding helpful links, etc.  To generate traffic, I’m going to visit forums and similar sites and post links to my articles, which will create backlinks for SEO and hopefully entice the forum users to visit my articles.  See my previous post about increasing eHow traffic for all of my ideas.

I’m going to try to improve one article per day until all 24 are well-polished.  In reality, I’ll probably work primarily on weekends and try to improve 5-10 at a time.  I’ll also add a few new eHow friends per day and comment on their articles to try and obtain some comments and ratings in return.  I think I’ll have to wait until the end of January to see if the extra effort is going to pay off, but it will be worth it.

I also plan on posting a lot more to the blog this month, since I don’t have to worry about writing 2,000 words of a novel every day.  I’m going to post more novel excerpts, eHow tips, and writing & self-discipline tips that helped me write the novel in less than 30 days.  Please subscribe if you want to follow my progress.  Thanks!
